Collect native seed at Hastings Sand Coulee SNA

Our work takes place on Dakota land. Learn more.
Join FMR to gather native prairie seed in the rare dry prairie at the Hastings Sand Coulee Scientific and Natural Area (SNA). Fourteen rare plant and animal species call the coulee home. The deeply rooted prairie plants also help filter pollutants from runoff water before it can enter the nearby Vermillion and Mississippi rivers.
At this volunteer event, FMR staff will provide a brief introduction to the site and an overview of how to identify and collect native prairie seeds. By collecting native seeds, volunteers will enhance FMR's ability to continue restoring native plants to this site and increasing biodiversity.
Accessibility
Hastings Sand Coulee SNA is a native prairie with no walking trails. To get to our work area, we'll hike about 10 minutes through tall and short prairie plants and up a small hill. We recommend wearing long pants and boots.
The closest bathroom facility is a gas station about a mile north. Please plan accordingly.
